01.08.2016 Tools transportation
Before we will start our workshops we have to unpack the professional tools, which were shipped from Faculty of Architecture TU Delft.
03.08.2016 Welcome evening.
Today we started unofficial part of the Summer School. During our welcome dinner we had a chance to know each other at the laid table in Parish Gastropub.
04.08.2016 Elevator pitch
Today we started with introductory lecture about the Living Units.
Afterwards students were working individually on their concepts. At the end of the day the elevator pitch presentations (one A-3 in one minute) took place. Everyone presented his primary concept of Living Unit. Some similarities could be found in ideas, therefore we combined into 4 teams that will develop the projects further.
05.08.2016 Group work
Today we started work on the group projects. After first day and individual ideas, the time for compromises and common solutions came. Let’s see what will come out of it.
06.08.2016 Shaping
This day was devoted to for finding of the group ideas. ‘House of card’ group explored properties of cardboard elements. Work on models and (sometimes) though discussion finally let us finish the day with strong concepts. At the evening we relaxed at the Odra river in Barbarka floating pub and later in the city center.
07.08.2016 Arrival of Dr. Bucky Lab
Today our special guest dr. -ing. Marcel Bilow, known also as a Dr. Bucky Lab joined our workshops. He immediately sat with students at the tables and gave them advice according to the production techniques and feasibility. Bucky Lab coffee helped us to keep our minds sharp. At the evening we had a dinner together and we visited Slodowa Island – one of the most unique places in Wroclaw.
08.08.2016 Work in progress
The work on the project is going quite well. We had a lot of discussions guided to the final decisions which had to be made to order the materials for prototyping. Dr. Bucky Lab like always gave us wise advises and hints according to the planning production methods and realization.
09.08.2016 Last day of design phase
The final touches were put to the projects. The materials were ordered and shop drawings prepared.
At the afternoon we had a nice visit of the Nestor of Faculty of Architecture Wroclaw University of Science and Technology – prof. Zbigniew Bać.
Quite a big impression was made by the model of our House of Cards – paper relief structure made by Olga Gumienna and Magda Wiktorska in our friends’ workshop ONIMO model makers.
Tomorrow we’re starting prototyping.
10.08.2016 First day in workshop
Today we started production phase of Summer School. After cleaning the work place our Dr. Bucky Lab gave a wonderful introduction to the all machines and production techniques. The jokes and fun he made only keep his tips in our heads. Soon after the introduction we started production work. Those who were scared before quite quickly got used to the machines.
11.08.2016 Work in progress
Our second day in production hall showed that everyone is very involved in his/her tasks, therefore the workflow is quite high. The projects got first shapes. The foundation of paper pavilion House of Cards show how big will be the structure. Everyone seemed to have infinitive powers. We finished the day with a short relaxing break and marvelous exhibition “Architecture VII”. We were also lucky to be guided by authors of the exhibition: Kuba Snopek and Iza Cichocka.
12.08.2016 Visitors
Today we had a couple of visitors. First our next vice dean for studies dr. Roman Czajka came to have a look. Both him and forthcoming dean of students’ affairs dr. Paweł Pach were quite amazed by the kind of work as well as by the projects’ ideas. Some of us needed a bit of relax after busy night at Slodowa Island. Dr. Bucky Lab gave an introduction to sewing. First finished elements like furniture or wall panels made us all happy and ready for next week.
13-14.08.2016 Sightseeing
During the weekend we had a tour to the Mountain of Snieżka, the highest point in the Karkonose and the whole Sudetes range system. Amazed by Polish meteo observatory on the top of the mountain we walked down to the town of Karpacz. Beautiful views and spaces gave us extra energy, although we were quite tiered after the climbing up. In Karpacz we visited Wang Church, relocated from Norwegian city in 1842.
Next day a tour around Wroclaw’s highlighted building was organized. We visited Wroclaw’s zoo, the Centennial Hall, listed on UNESCO World Heritage List, concrete structure designed by Max Berg.
15.08. 2016 There was a cake…
Last week of work. The day was calm and all groups were busy with production of their projects’ elements. All of us seem to be enough familiar with the tools and the recollection of primary fear during the introduction day seemed to be a joke. However there was something special in the air. Dr. Bucky Lab had his 40th birthday. We all planned a special party for him. And surprise. We told him that maybe some of us will come at the evening for few beers to celebrate, but in his eyes it didn’t looked promising. In the mean time we rented a boat from StatekWroclaw.pl. When Marcel entered the boat we were all there with special Bucky Lab cake. Although it’s hard to fool Marcel Bilow we made it and his face was priceless. the party on the boat last for three hours. Therefore we had to postpone starting hour of next day to 11…
16.08.2016 We’re getting famous
Later start haven’t stop us with the work flow. The projects get their shape and now we can see how big they are. As the living units should be a emergency shelters it can be easily seen that next to the basic shelter they also will bring more values social and esthetic ones. Today local branch of press printed article of our work. Even if the title can mislead the reader in the text our general idea is clearly explained. Today, we also had a special guest prof. Marcin Brzezicki from Faculty of Architecture Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
17.08.2016 Will we finish on time ?
Engagement of all the participants is very high. Is it because of coming deadline ? Although there is no stress, one can feel that everyone is very focused and try to do best. Maybe because the students will be obliged to spend one night in theirs structures and no one would like to sleep in partly finished shelter.

18.08.2016 Projects get shape
The realization phase is about to finish. the project combined from prepared in advance elements suddenly popped out. We can already see what is the size and geometry. And also the color.
We are also very proud that dr. Bucky Lab, the best teacher at TU Delft for the year 2013 wears the T-shirt with logo of Humanization if Urban Environment – students’ scientific organization form Faculty of Architecture Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
Cardboard elements, that will form House of Cards, were being impregnated. Tomorrow last day of production. Cross fingers…
19.08.2016 Last touch
The last day of production. Some of us were still busy till the end of the day, while the others were already in heavens relaxing and chilling out in their built structures. Two of our stars Wojtek and Damian were interviewing by TV journalist. At the evening we had a marvelous lecture by dr. Marcel Bilow about Unobtanium – the perfect building material which… doesn’t exist. Several guests came to listen to the lecture. Later in the evening we started our final party, which ‘prepared’ students to sleep in their structures. The test had to be done, and authors needed to experience it firsthand.
20.08.2016 Presentation day
The final day of our Summer School of Architecture was designated to media. In the morning everyone was waking up slowly and having a bite for breakfast. Then it started. Official presentation of all the projects. While some of our students were shy, others presented themselves like queens and kings. After turmoil caused by media, everyone got certification of participation and we started to clean the workshop and preparing Bucky Lab tools for journey to Netherlands.
We are all as tired as happy !
